Tremors reported in Jammu & Kashmir, Delhi-NCR and nearby regions after a moderate earthquake struck near the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border
April 3, 2026 (New Delhi/Srinagar) – Tremors were felt across several parts of North India, including Jammu & Kashmir and the Delhi-NCR region, on Friday night after a moderate earthquake struck near the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border.
The quake occurred at approximately 9:45 PM and lasted for a few seconds, prompting residents in multiple cities to step out of their homes as a precaution. While the tremors were noticeable, there were no immediate reports of damage to property or loss of life.
According to officials in Jammu & Kashmir, the earthquake measured around 5.9 in magnitude. However, international monitoring agencies such as GFZ reported the magnitude to be approximately 5.5. The epicentre was located in Afghanistan, at a latitude of 36.398 degrees North and longitude of 70.878 degrees East.
Residents in high-rise buildings in Delhi-NCR reported stronger sensations due to structural sway, while those in parts of Jammu & Kashmir experienced brief but distinct shaking. Authorities have advised citizens to remain calm and follow basic safety protocols during such incidents.
Seismically active zones in and around the Himalayan region often experience such earthquakes due to tectonic movements. Officials continue to monitor the situation, although no aftershocks or emergency alerts have been issued so far.
The incident serves as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity, even when the epicentre lies outside national borders. Emergency response teams remain on standby, ensuring preparedness in case of further developments.
